City enforcement agencies assisting with livestock inspections

The City’s enforcement agencies, along with the Disaster Risk Management Centre(DRMC),  assisted officials from the Western Cape Agriculture Department who conducted livestock inspections and vaccinations over the weekend to manage suspected cases of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Mfuleni and Kalkfontein. In addition, the City’s enforcement departments arrested 392 people for various infringements the past week.

On Saturday, 7 February and Sunday, 8 February 2026, Law Enforcement officers from the Animal Control Unit assisted the provincial Agricultural Department with escorts into Mfuleni and Kalkfontein to conduct inspections on suspected Foot-and-Mouth Disease cases. Traffic and Metro Police officers assisted with road blocks while the DRMC activated a Joint Operation Centre to monitor deployments.

Officers are assisting in enforcing no livestock movement in and out of Mfuleni and Kalkfontein. The Western Cape Agriculture Department carried out vaccinations in the areas over the weekend. The South African Police Service is the lead agency with Traffic, Law Enforcement, and Metro Police officers playing an important supporting role. 

During weekly enforcement patrols, the City’s enforcement agencies issued 84 856 notices and arrested 392 suspects

Metro Police officers made 113 arrests and issued 3 192 notices.

Law Enforcement officers arrested 205 suspects and issued 14 428 notices during weekly patrols.

Traffic Officers issued 67 236 fines and recorded 74 arrests, of which 67 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless/negligent driving and five for other offences. They also recorded 67 236 offences, impounded 250 public transport vehicles and executed 1 714 warrants of arrest.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 663 calls for assistance this past weekend. Of the calls received, 81 were physical assault related cases and 51 were pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents.

‘During the past week, our enforcement officers on patrol issued close to 85 000 notices and arrested 392 suspects for various offences. Apart from doing crime prevention duty in communities and on the City’s roads, our Safety and Security officers also assisted the provincial Agricultural Department with escorts to conduct inspections for possible livestock Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Kalksteenfontein and Mfuleni. This is another example of the dedication and support by our officers to ensure the safety of communities - together we can ensure that we can safeguard informal and formal farmers’ livestock’,  said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
